LAS VEGAS – Today Elizabeth Helgelien, candidate for Congress in Southern Nevada, issued a statement expressing support for prominent Nevada GOP leaders, including State Party Chair Michael McDonald, Vice Chair Jim DeGraffenreid, Clark County Chairman Jesse Law, Shawn Meehan, Eileen Rice, and Jim Hindle III in wake of their recent indictment. She decried it as weaponization of the legal process and criminalization of political participation.

Elizabeth Helgelien stands firmly in support of those indicted and issues the following statement:

“It is with deep concern and a heavy heart that I respond to the recent indictments of  our state party officers. These individuals have dedicated themselves to public service, and it is disheartening to see them facing legal challenges.

I want to express my support for Michael McDonald, Jim DeGraffenreid, and the others who have been indicted. It is important to remember that an indictment does not imply guilt, and everyone deserves a fair and impartial legal process. These individuals have the right to defend themselves, and I have full confidence a fair trial will show they’re innocent of any wrong-doing.

At the same time, I am angered by the growing trend of criminalizing political participation. Engaging in the democratic process, regardless of political affiliation, should not lead to legal repercussions. We must strive for a system that fosters and respects the rights of individuals to actively participate in choosing, informing, and aiding our country’s leaders.

This moment should also serve as a stark reminder that election integrity is an issue that transcends party lines. Democrats, as well as Republicans, must be held to the same standard of accountability. Our country depends on it.”
